Yule Ball

The Yule Ball is a special Christmas celebration that is traditionally held during the Triwizard Tournament. The Yule Ball for the Triwizard Tournament of 1994 - 1995 took place at Hogwarts on the evening of December 25, 1994.

The Ball on December 25, 1994
The Yule Ball was open to fourth-years and above. Younger students could attend if they were the dance partner of an older student. Dress Robes were required. The celebration started at eight o' clock with a feast. The champions and their partners then opened the ball. Albus Dumbledore booked the popular band The Weird Sisters (GF22).
The Yule Ball took place in the Great Hall, which was redecorated for the occasion. The house tables were replaced by about a hundred smaller tables, each seating a dozen people. At the top of the Hall, there was a round table for the judges and champions. The walls were covered with silver frost; garlands of mistletoe and ivy crossed the ceiling. Outside the castle, there was a rose garden complete with ornamental paths, fountains, statues and stone benches (GF23).

Events Happening at the Ball
Events at the ball foreshadow many things to come. Most can only be fully understood in hindsight.
- Percy Weasley, recently promoted personal assistant of Barty Crouch, Sr. represents his boss, who claims to be ill (GF23). In fact, Mr. Crouch has been placed under the Imperius Curse by his son (GF35).
- In a pathetic attempt to conceal his jealousy, Ron accuses Hermione of "fraternising with the enemy" because she came with Viktor Krum (GF23).
- Fred and George Weasley corner Ludo Bagman to ask for their winnings from the Quidditch World Cup (GF23, GF37).
- Igor Karkaroff discusses the reappearance of the Dark Mark on his left arm with Severus Snape (GF23, GF36).
- Hagrid tells Madame Maxime that he is a half-giant in the rose garden. She iss shocked that he implieds she is also part giant and runs out on him. The conversation is overheard by Ron, Harry and Rita Skeeter, who has transformed into a beetle (GF23, GF37).
- Several couples meet at the Yule Ball, including Ginny Weasley and Michael Corner (OP16), and Parvati Patil and a boy from Beauxbatons (GF24).
