You-Know-Who is a pseudonym used by the wizarding population when they refer to Voldemort. People are so terrified of him, even after his defeat, that they cannot pick up the courage to mention his real name, and therefore, they use this one. Other pseudonyms for Voldemort are the more formal "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" and the reverent "Dark Lord" that is used by his followers. A mention of Voldemort's name usually causes panic (PS1, PS6, PS17, CS2, GF9, OP16).

When Tom Riddle chooses the name "Lord Voldemort" for himself, his objective is to create a name "wizards everywhere would one day fear to speak" (CS17). Albus Dumbledore, Voldemort's greatest opponent, rejects the wizarding world's use of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named or You-Know-Who on the grounds that "fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself" (PS17). However, few wizards are brave enough to follow Dumbledore's advice. The only wizards and witches known to do so are Harry Potter (PS17), Remus Lupin (PA8), Sirius Black (PA19), Barty Crouch, Sr. (GF30), Gellert Grindelwald (DH23), and Hermione Granger after Voldemort's return (OP15).

The following persons usually use "You-Know-Who" to refer to Voldemort:
