You-Know-Who
From UnknowableWiki
You-Know-Who is a pseudonym used by the wizarding population when they refer to Voldemort. People are so terrified of him, even after his defeat, that they cannot pick up the courage to mention his real name, and therefore, they use this one. Other pseudonyms for Voldemort are the more formal "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" and the reverent "Dark Lord" that is used by his followers. A mention of Voldemort's name usually causes panic (PS1, PS6, PS17, CS2, GF9, OP16).
When Tom Riddle chooses the name "Lord Voldemort" for himself, his objective is to create a name "wizards everywhere would one day fear to speak" (CS17). Albus Dumbledore, Voldemort's greatest opponent, rejects the wizarding world's use of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named or You-Know-Who on the grounds that "fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself" (PS17). However, few wizards are brave enough to follow Dumbledore's advice. The only wizards and witches known to do so are Harry Potter (PS17), Remus Lupin (PA8), Sirius Black (PA19), Barty Crouch, Sr. (GF30), Gellert Grindelwald (DH23), and Hermione Granger after Voldemort's return (OP15).
The following persons usually use "You-Know-Who" to refer to Voldemort:
- An unknown small wizard (possibly Filius Flitwick)
- On the day after Voldemort's first defeat, Vernon Dursley runs into a wizard who tells him he should celebrate You-Know-Who's disappearance. Of course, Vernon has no idea who You-Know-Who is supposed to be (PS1).
- Minerva McGonagall (PS1, PA10)
- When Dumbledore criticizes McGonagall for saying You-Know-Who on the evening of November 30, 1981, she reluctantly says Voldemort's name (PS1).
- Minerva also uses "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" occasionally and "Dark Lord" once (OP12, DH30).
- Rubeus Hagrid (PS4, PS5, PA10, OP20, DH31)
- In his first conversation with Harry, he uses Voldemort's name once, so that Harry can learn it, and asks him never to make him say it again (PS4).
- Harry Potter, especially during his first year at Hogwarts and during the hunt for the Horcruxes (PS4, PS6, PS17, GF9, OP13, OP16, OP26, HBP7, DH14, DH15, DH17, DH20, DH21, DH22, DH24, DH28)
- Harry is never afraid of saying "Voldemort", but he sometimes uses You-Know-Who in conversation with others who are scared of the real name, especially before Dumbledore tells him to always use "Voldemort" (PS17).
- The Weasleys (PS6, CS3, PA4, PA11, GF9, GF10, GF29, GF31, OP4, OP5, OP12, OP13, OP15, OP18, OP20, OP22, OP23, OP24, OP26, OP33, HBP5, HBP6, HBP7, HBP14, DH5, DH6, DH14, DH15, DH20, DH22, DH24, DH25, DH29)
- Fred and George, although afraid of saying Voldemort's name, ridicule "You-Know-Who" by designing a prank item called U-No-Poo—much to Molly's dismay (HBP6).
- During the Trio's hunt for the Horcruxes, Ron asks Harry and Hermione to use "You-Know-Who", because it feels "like a jinx" when they say "Voldemort". They obey him even after he leaves (DH14 DH15, DH17, DH17, DH18, DH19, DH20). His intuition is correct—there is a Taboo on Voldemort's name and whoever speaks it can be tracked down (DH20).
- Hermione Granger, until fifth year and during the Horcrux hunt (PS15, PA6, PA19, GF9, GF18, OP4, OP12, OP13, OP20, DH15, DH17, DH18, DH19, DH22, DH22, DH27)
- After Voldemort's return, Hermione starts using his real name. The first time she does this is when she tries to convince Harry to start a Defence Against the Dark Arts Studdy group. It is one of the reasons that convince Harry (OP15). She starts saying "You-Know-Who" again after Ron asks her to in 1997 (DH14).
- Colin Creevey (CS6)
- Hannah Abbott (CS11)
- Ernie Macmillan (CS11, OP16)
- Ernie also uses "Dark Lord" once (CS11).
- Stan Shunpike (PA3)
- Madam Rosmerta (PA10)
- Cornelius Fudge (PA10, GF8, GF36, HBP1)
- In his second visit to the Prime Minister, Fudge mentions You-Know-Who and then exclaims: "But of course, you don't even know who You-Know-Who is!". He then writes the name on a piece of paper. When the Prime Minister tries to speak it, Fudge interrupts him with "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" (HBP1).
- Filius Flitwick (PA10, DH30)
- Rita Skeeter (GF24, GF31, OP25, DH2, DH11)
- Ludo Bagman (GF30)
- Tonks (OP5, DH5)

- Neville Longbottom (OP11, OP16, OP33, DH29)
- Angelina Johnson (OP13)
- Zacharias Smith (OP16, OP18)
- Cho Chang (OP18)
- Alastor Moody (OP22, DH4)
- Augusta Longbottom (OP23)
- The Daily Prophet (OP38)
- Kingsley Shacklebolt (DH5)
- Mundungus Fletcher (DH12)
- Ted Tonks (DH15)
- Fenrir Greyback (DH23)
- Fenrir also uses "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" and "Dark Lord" (DH23).
- Aberforth Dumbledore (DH28)
- Lily Evans (DH33)
