Wizard's Duel

A Wizard's Duel is a confrontation between two wizards in which only the use of wands to injure the opponent is allowed. As a rule, each combatant has a second—a friend who will continue the fight in case he or she dies (PS9). Before any spells are cast, politeness demands that each wizard should bow to the opponent (GF34).

In Harry Potter's first year, Draco Malfoy challenges him to a duel at midnight in the trophy room. Ron Weasley offered to be Harry's second, and Crabbe was Draco's. The arrangement was a trap, and Draco informed Argus Filch that a student would be out of bed that night, hoping that Harry would get caught (PS9).

Spells commonly used in duels

Expelliarmus is one of the most useful spells in a duel (CS11); it saves Harry Potter's life in a confrontation against Lord Voldemort in the Little Hangleton graveyard (GF34), and Harry makes a point to teach the spell to the DA members in the group's first meeting in the Room of Requirement (OP18).

Protego, the Shield Charm, is also extremely practical, as it blocks most hexes. Bellatrix Lestrange uses it against Harry when they are duelling in the Ministry of Magic atrium (OP36), and Harry casts it several times in the Battle of Hogwarts to protect Hogwartians (DH36).

Stunning Spells are frequently employed in duels and battles (GF34, OP35, DH4, DH31, DH36).

Voldemort and his Death Eaters use the Unforgivable Curses liberally while duelling, especially Avada Kedavra (GF34, OP36, DH4, DH36).

Famous duels

It is said that no wizarding duel matched that between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald in 1945 (DH2). This confrontation results in Grindelwald's imprisonment in Nurmengard (DH18); Dumbledore acquires possession of the Elder Wand by defeating Gellert that day (DH24).

The Duelling Club

In 1992, when Gilderoy Lockhart is teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts, he obtains Dumbledore's permission to found a Duelling Club at the school. Severus Snape, an excellent dueller, agrees to help Lockhart in the first meeting of the club.

The two teachers duel briefly, and Snape Disarms Lockhart. After this, Severus chooses Harry and Draco to duel before the rest of the class. As per Snape's instructions, Draco uses the Serpensortia spell against his opponent, conjuring a snake. Harry speaks to it in Parseltongue, ordering the serpent not to attack Justin Finch-Fletchley, and most of the onlookers are terrified to hear that he is a Parselmouth.

The Duelling Club has no meetings after this (CS11).
