Vault 713 is a high-security vault at Gringotts. It can only be opened by a Gringotts goblin, who opens it by stroking the door, which then disappears (PS5).

Vault 713 contained the Philosopher's Stone until July 31, 1991, when Hagrid removed it and transferred it to Hogwarts on Dumbledore's orders. That same day, Quirinus Quirrell attempted to rob the vault to obtain the Stone for Lord Voldemort, who needed it to regenerate his corporeal form; however, though he managed to get into the vault, it had already been emptied (PS5, PS8, PS17). The attempted robbery was widely publicized, as breaking into Gringotts and getting out alive is nearly impossible, and caused a stir about "Dark wizards or witches unknown" (PS8). However, the break-in was not as difficult as it would have been had the Stone still been in the vault; because the vault was empty, the security on the vault was minimal, and breaking in was much simpler (DH24).
