Unbreakable Vow
From UnknowableWiki
The Unbreakable Vow is a spell used in order to bind a person to fulfill a certain promise, on the iminent threat of certain death, should he or she fail to do so (HBP16).
In order to cast this spell, one needs a Bonder, a third person to perform the charm itself. The one who will make the Unbreakable Vow must hold right hands with the one to whom the promise will be made. The latter then asks the first whether he or she will fulfill the terms of the Vow. At each request, a thin tongue of shiny flame issues from the tip of the Bonder's wand, binding itself around the other two's clasped hands (HBP2).
Known Vows
- Severus Snape makes an Unbreakable Vow to Narcissa Malfoy, using Bellatrix Lestrange as their Bounder. The Potions master vows to protect Draco from harm in the boy's attempt to kill Albus Dumbledore and, should Malfoy fail to do so, to kill the headmaster himself (HBP2).
- Fred and George Weasley almost convince a five-year-old Ron to make an Unbreakable Vow to the first, using the second as the Bonder. Luckily, Arthur catches his sons, when they are already holding hands, and puts a stop to it (HBP15).
