Trelawney's first prophecy is a prophecy made by Sybill Trelawney to Albus Dumbledore. It goes as follows:

"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies..." (OP37)

A record of the prophecy was placed at the Hall of Prophecy at the Department of Mysteries, labeled:

"S.P.T. to A.P.W.B.D.

Dark lord

and (?)Harry Potter"

The caption contains the initials of the Seer who made the prophecy and of the one who heard it. The capital letters are followed by the names of those about whom it speaks.

Old

"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...": the only person with a chance to defeat Voldermort for good was born at the end of July of 1980, son of parents who had defied the Dark Lord three times and escaped alive.

According to Dumbledore, only two boys could have been applied to this part of the prophecy, Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. This being the only part of the prophecy Voldemort had knowledge of, he decided to kill the boy most likely to be dangerous to him while he was still a baby, unnaware that there might be risks in such an attack. The Dark Lord chose Harry Potter instead of Neville beacause it was in the former, a half-blood, that he saw himself the most.

"And the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not..": by attacking Harry, several things happened that Voldemort could not forsee. Not only did the Killing Curse fail to take Harry's life and left the Dark Lord without a body, but it also marked Harry with a scar and gave him powers that protected the boy against Voldemort.

Hog's Head

Somewhere between August, 1979 and June, 1980 (most probably August), Sybill Trelawney applied for a position at Hogwarts as the new Divination teacher. Dumbledore agreed to interview her, despite his wish to ban the subject from the school curriculum entirely, for she was the great-great-greaddaughter Cassandra Trelawney, a famous gifted Seer.

Their meeting took place in a room at the Hog's Head inn. Dumbledore was dissapointed at Trelawney, for it seemed to him she did not have any Seeing abilities herself. However, when the headmaster made to leave, Sybill uttered what would be considered her first true prophecy (OP37).

Severus Snape happened to be on the pub at the time, and, eavesdropping behind the door of room the headmaster was in, overheard the first three sentences of the prophecy before being caught in the act by Aberforth Dumbledore. As Trelawney herself told Harry, "there was a commotion outside the door and it flew open, and there was that ather uncouth barman stading with Snape, who was waffling about having come the wrong way uo the stairs". Snape was then kicked out of the building. It is presumable this scene took place after the Seer had already made the prophecy, and that the Death Eater was prevented from hearing all of its contents prior to the door being opened (OP37, HBP25).

Albus Dumbledore tells Harry that sixteen years ago, before he was born, a prophecy which involved him and Voldemort was made by Sybill Trelawney. The Prophecy was made in a pub called the Hog's Head, because Dumbledore was interviewing Sybill Trelawney for the Divination post at Hogwarts, and partly overheard by Severus Snape, who informed Voldemort.
