The Voldemort-Harry Connection

The Voldemort-Harry connection is a deep connection between Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter, which was doubled and strengthened by involuntary actions of both parts. There is no record of a connection this profound or this powerful in wizarding history. Voldemort and Harry's wands mirrored the relationship between their owners (DH35).

The prophecy

Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter were first linked due to a prophecy of Sybill Trelawney's, which stated that a boy that would be born in the end of July would have the power to defeat the Dark Lord (OP37). Voldemort, who was informed of this prophecy by Severus Snape (HBP25), took this to mean that the child in question was the half-blood son of Lily and James Potter, even though another child, born one day before Harry—Neville Longbottom, a pure-blood—also matched the criteria outlined in the prophecy (OP37).

Voldemort's choice to pursue Harry ultimately brought about his downfall. When the Dark Lord attacked the Potters' home in Godric's Hollow, he killed James and tried not to kill Lily (DH17), staying true to his word to Severus Snape (DH33). Lily chose to die for her one-year-old son. Her sacrifice called upon ancient magic that the Dark Lord had not foreseen, and caused Voldemort to fail when he tried to cast the Killing Curse on Harry. The Avada Kedavra rebounded, and Harry was not injured, save for a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead. Voldemort, on the other hand, was reduced to a measly half-life, unable to take corporeal shape if not by possessing living creatures and willing himself to exist (GF33). He would have been killed, if he had not already made several Horcruxes (HBP23).

The Horcrux

When Voldemort tried to kill Harry, a part of his soul—which had been rendered unstable by his splitting of it with the making of five Horcruxes—broke apart from him and latched onto young Harry's soul, effectively transforming him into Voldemort's sixth, unintended Horcrux (DH35).
