In 1993, Flourish and Blotts orders copies of The Monster Book of Monsters in order to to sell them to the Hogwarts students. The books are locked in an large iron cage, but end up wrestling each other and torning a great amount of pages. The Flourish and Blotts manager is forced to wear thick gloves and use a walking stick to retrieve the copies from the cage, and ends up bitten several times. Very much annoyed at the havoc caused by the books, the manager claims he will never again stock the book (PA4).
Hagrid sends Harry The Monster Book of Monsters as a present for his thirteenth birthday. The boy, unnaware of a method to stop the book of snapping at him, ends up buckling it with one of his belts after a short dispute (OP1).
When the students arrive in class with their copies bound by different kinds of belts and chains, Hagrid shows disappointment that none of them had figured out how to convince the book to open gently (PA6).
