The Lexicon

The Lexicon is a Harry Potter encyclopedia published by Steve Vander Ark. It is probably the most controversial book in the fandom due to the lawsuit between J.K. Rowling and RDR Books (the company publishing the book) which resulted from the announcement of the book's publication; because the book used content from the Harry Potter books, Rowling asserted that was it was as a violation of copyright. (Additionally, Rowling had already stated that she would release an encyclopedia about the series at a later date; Vander Ark's book seemed to impinge on her book.)

The lawsuit caused a schism in the fandom between supporters of Vander Ark, who feared the loss of their ability to use Harry Potter content under the terms of Fair Use, and between supporters of Rowling, who believed that The Lexicon would violate Rowling's copyright over Harry Potter.

In the end, the suit was settled in Rowling's favor. The book had to be changed to exclude information from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch through the Ages and to contain a disclaimer on the cover declaring that it was in no way affiliated with J.K. Rowling or WB, but it was eventually published on January 16, 2009.
