Swelling Solution

A Swelling Solution is a potion which causes swelling; it does not have to be ingested, but takes effect immediately when it makes contact with human skin. One of its ingredients is puffer-fish eyes.

In the Trio's second year, Severus Snape's Potions class is set to brew this potion. Draco Malfoy flicks puffer-fish eyes at Harry and Ron, and Harry's potion is far too watery, but the pair are more concentrated on waiting for Hermione to signal for a diversion. At the appropriate time, Harry throws one of Fred's Filibuster fireworks into Goyle's cauldron just before it goes off, splashing several students with the Swelling Solution it contains and enlarging their noses, lips, arms, and eyes. Snape must give each student who was splashed some Deflating Draft to restore them to normal, adequately distracting him so that Hermione can nick bicorn horn and boomslang skin from his private stores for the Polyjuice Potion they are brewing in secret (CS11).
