Stubby Boardman is the lead singer of the popular wizarding band The Hobgoblins. He retired after being bitten on the ear by a turnip during a concert in Little Norton Church Hall around late 1980 or early 1981.

Doris Purkiss, who claims that she was involved with Stubby, was certain that she recognized him in the newspaper pictures of Azkaban escapee Sirius Black. She wrote to The Quibbler, stating that "Sirius Black" was a mere pseudonym of Boardman's. She claimed that the musician was having a candlelit dinner with her on the day of the Muggle killings for which Black was imprisoned. Purkiss also wrote to the Minister for Magic, requesting a full pardon for Stubby.

The Quibbler printed the article in its August 1995 edition, under the headline "SIRIUS — BLACK AS HE'S PAINTED?". Kingsley Shacklebolt handed Mr. Weasley a copy of the magazine when Arthur passed by Auror Headquarters with Harry, on his way to the boy's hearing. Shacklebolt instructed him to pass on the item to Sirius, who would surely find it amusing (OP7).

On September 1, Harry saw Luna Lovegood reading The Quibbler aboard the Hogwarts Express. The mention of his godfather in the headline sparked his interest, but he was shocked to see how evidently untrue the magazine's claims were (OP10).
