Sockpuppets

Sockpuppets are empty usernames that have no other purpose than to be used by Suethors to boost their morale when a fic has low reviews. Sockpuppets will often be used to review a Suethor's work with praise and adoration, or occasionally will show up as rabid fangirls when the Suethor is attacked. They are usually not taken seriously, and are mocked when discovered. Sockpuppets are also used to disguise the true identity of trolls.

No entry on Sockpuppets in a Harry Potter wiki could be complete without mentioning Ms. Scribe, a writer who used her Sockpuppets to gain BNF status before finally being unmasked.

The term is also used in roleplaying, on occasion.
