The Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, or S.P.E.W., is an organisation that lobbies for the freedom of and/or salary for house-elves. S.P.E.W was created by Hermione Granger in her fourth year. The original name of the group was to be Stop the Outrageous Abuse of our Fellow Magical Creatures and Campaign for a Change in their Legal Status; however, Hermione admitted that the name was too long to fit on the badges (GF14).
Students who would like to become members of S.P.E.W must pay two sickles to join; this gets them a badge, and the rest of the proceeds go into making leaflets for the organization (GF14).
Hermione feels very strongly on the subject of enslaving house elves. After recruiting her two best friends, Ron and Harry (GF14), she continued to badger other people to join the organisation. She was able to get a few other people to join, such as Neville, but they only joined to stop her pestering them. Others were actually interested in what Hermione had to say about the subject; however, they were a bit wary of taking a more active role in the cause (GF15).
Some people regarded the entire cause as a joke. Fred and George Weasley certainly thought so, and tried to tell Hermione countless times that the House Elves enjoy working without pay (GF15).
After her fourth year, Hermione seemed to discontinue S.P.E.W; however, later in life she continued to campaign for house-elves, right before she went into law for the Ministry (BLC).
