Runes are an ancient set of letters used to perform magic. There is a subject at Hogwarts entitled Study of Ancient Runes (PA4).

There are runes carved around the edge of Dumbledore's Pensieve (GF30). The Quibbler published a story about runes, claiming that if certain runes were read upside-down, they revealed a spell to make one's enemy's ears turn into kumquats (OP10).

In her Ancient Runes OWLs, Hermione mistranslates the rune "ehwaz" (which means partnership), confusing it with "eihwaz" (defence); she realises her mistake afterwards and is furious (OP31).

When the Trio decides to go on a quest to look for Horcruxes, Hermione is not sure whether they will have to translate runes at some point. She decides to take Spellman's Syllabary in her handbag just in case (DH6). Shortly before Christmas, 1996, she and Harry spend some time examining the copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard (DH16) that Dumbledore had left for Hermione in his will (DH7). Hermione notices that the symbol of the Hallows was inked in above the title of the book. Hermione is intrigued, and researches the symbol in her books; she quickly discovers that it is not a rune (DH16).
