Characteristics
Hagrid is a huge man, at least twice as tall as a regular man and thrice as wide. He has a wild, tangled beard, and a long mane of hair. Despite his gruff appearance, he is extremely kind, loyal and trustworthy. He is especially loyal to Albus Dumbledore, who has helped him on several occasions.
He is extremely fond of dangerous magical creatures, something that has gotten Hagrid in trouble several times.
Hogwarts
Hagrid's foundness for lethal animals caused his expulsion from Hogwarts in his third year; he was falsely accused by Tom Marvolo Riddle of having set loose the Chamber of Secrets monster, causing the death of a student. Riddle convinced Armando Dippet, the Headmaster at the time, that Aragog, an Acromantula Hagrid had been hiding in the dungeons, was the creature responsible for the killing (CS13).
After he was expelled, Hagrid's wand was split in half. He saved its remnants, keeping them hidden inside a pink umbrella (PS4). Regardless of the incident, one teacher remained skeptical of Riddle's claims: Albus Dumbledore, who would eventually become Headmaster. In that capacity, he hired Hagrid as gamekeeper, something for which the half-giant is eternally grateful.
1981
Hagrid was entrusted by Dumbledore with the important task of bringing baby Harry Potter to number four, Privet Drive. He went to the ruins of Godric's Hollow; there he met Sirius Black, pallid and trembling; he had just heard of what had happened to the Potters and had come to see what he could do to help. He offered to take Harry with him (he was the boy's godfather). Hagrid comforted him, but says that he would bringing Harry to Little Whinging, as per Dumbledore's orders. Sirius argued for a bit, but eventually lent his flying motorcycle to the half-giant, claiming that he would no longer need it (PA10)
Visibly shaken by the death of Lily and James Potter as well, Hagrid met Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall a while later in Privet Drive, carrying baby Harry ("He fell asleep as we was flyin' over Bristol."). The gamekeeper cried when the baby was left at the Dursleys' doorstep. He then left, saying he would return the motorcycle to Sirius (PS1).
The Philosopher's Stone
Hagrid lent his three-headed dog Fluffy to Dumbledore, so he could guard the trapdoor over the chamber where the Philosopher's Stone was kept.
Teaching career
He was also the first owner of Buckbeak (PA6), and stayed with Hippogriff after Sirius Black died (HBP3). He has a hunting dog named Fang (PS15).
In 1995, he goes to the giants and tries to recruit some of them to fight Voldemort, but fails (OP20). He there meets his younger, half-brother Grawp, who he takes back to Hogwarts and tries to civilize with limited results (OP30).
