Writing this ship
If you're thinking of writing a Ron/Hermione fic, here are a few handy pointers:
The Canon Progression
When writing a canon Ron/Hermione fic, you should remember the development within the books. Remember, there are 'anvil-sized hints' - and you can use them to your advantage to set the mood!
- First year started with Ron finding Hermione to be exceptionally bossy. He was also responsible for making her cry - which would later lead to her being in the bathroom on Hallowe'en with a Troll. The same event caused the Trio to become friends.
- There seems to be a 'boy-pulls-girls-hair-because-he-likes-her' thing going on.
- The first hints of the ship are evident by PA (though many can be seen in the first two books). They are both passionate - which has always created friction.
- By the Yule Ball in GF, tensions regarding dates have brought the ship to life. (Viktor Krum, Ron asking Hermione as a last resort, someone 'actually noticing her', and the after-ball outburst.)
- By OP you almost see them team up together to help Harry - yet they still have conflicting personalities.
- HBP could be considered the coming out - there was the Lav-Lav thing, the Slug Club confrontations, Ron's disbelief that Hermione most likely kissed Krum - everything that couldn't be avoided anymore basically proving that Ron/Hermione is a true canon ship.
Avoid
Here are some things to stop your fic from turning bad:
- Either Ron or Hermione using a beautifying potion and suddenly becoming so hot that one finally notices the other.
- The story beginning something like 'Now that Harry Potter had conveniently removed Voldemort, Ron and Hermione were able to snog freely.'
- Hermione tutoring Ron.
- Ron getting very jealous over Hermione and Harry; despite the fact that Ron is often jealous of Harry, he's never been annoyed at their friendship or anything along those lines.
- Jumping into a very cozy Ron/Hermione moment or even a sex scene in the middle of the Horcrux hunt; at the very least lead up to it a bit!
Remember!
- Ron can sometimes be self-conscious -- but so can Hermione!
About Ron
- Ron is bumbling. It's true. We know it. Don't overdo it.
- Remember Ron is shown in canon to be both sarcastic and also sharply witty. He is by no means stupid.
- Ron always needs the last word, especially with Hermione. Use this to your advantage.
- Despite the fact that he gets on Hermione's nerves, he can often be the one to make her laugh. It never hurts to remember that!
- Though Ron can sometimes be quite dense and a tad immature, he is by no means a complete bastard.
About Hermione
- Hermione is a bookworm, but she is not a 'nerd.' She does not, for instance, spend 'all' her time in the library; take care in not characterising her as such.
- Hermione is not physically attractive.
- Having been close friends with Harry and Ron for years, Hermione finds girl-to-girl relationships strained (her interactions with Lavender and Parvati, for instance, do not demonstrate that they are particularly close).
- She has a good sense of emotions and, of course, logic within a situation; Ron has a tendency to be more blunt and oblivious to other people's emotions.
- Hermione is a Muggle-born, and her parents are dentists. This fact has surfaced in canon (for example, they wanted her to use braces versus magic to fix her teeth), and can be used in fanon.
- Hermione is often on good terms with Ginny.
- Molly may not have the same close relationship with Hermione as she does with Harry, but Hermione gets along fairly well with all the Weasleys--at least a lot more than Fleur. So there's not too much room for a conflict storyline there!
History in the Fandom
The Ron/Hermione ship perhaps predates all of the known ones (excepting maybe Harry/Hermione, simply because it's a natural instinct to group together the protagonist and female best friend), and has had a loyal following since at least the publication of GF. For many years, the Ron/Hermione ship was involved in a furious debate with Harmony, and often emerged with the upper hand because they had the support of the Harry/Ginny shippers. Both GF and OP were considered as solid proof of the Ron/Hermione ship, the first in particular because of the Yule Ball part, but it wasn't until HBP that all but the most delusional Harmonians accepted Ron/Hermione.
In Fanfiction
Ron/Hermione is perhaps the most popular pairing in all of romance fanfiction, at least as far as numbers are concerned. There are fanfiction archives devoted to this ship, such as Checkmated. Despite this profusion of R/Hr fics, many readers find them dull because, since it's just about the most canonical ship there is, there are only so many variations one can put in a R/Hr fic. The fics that find innovative ways of bringing them together are usually very well received.
Heron and Harry/Ginny often are supported by the same people because they complement each other, and they are the ones that ended up happening in the end. The combination is very popular, and is known under the name of One Big Happy Weasley Family or OBHWF. Indeed, MuggleNet Fanfiction have a separate section just for the combination of those two ships, and it was one of the largest Romance sections.
Ron/Hermione is one of the very few ships that tend to portray Ron in a favourable light. Because the reality of this ship is unavoidable, authors of other ships are often forced to make Ron a detestable character to ensure that he doesn't end up with Hermione. This is particularly prevalent in Dramione fics, and often in Harmony as well.
