Robbie Coltrane is the actor who plays Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies. He started his career in theatre and stand-up comedy shows, building his reputation as a comedian.

Before working in the Harry Potter movies, Coltrane was already famous for his role as Dr. Fitz in the TV series Cracker (for which he was awarded three BAFTAs), and for playing Valentin Zukovsky in two James Bond movies: GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough.

It has been said that J.K. Rowling had specifically asked for Robbie Coltrane to play the part of Rubeus Hagrid. The actor, along with Maggie Smith, was the only one the author referred to by name when discussing the casting for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

His part in the first Harry Potter movie earned him a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in the BAFTA film awards, adding up to five BAFTA nominations thus far.
