Remus John Lupin was one of the four Marauders; his friends called him "Moony" due to his lycanthropy. He was a member of the Order of the Phoenix, and died in the Battle of Hogwarts.

Characteristics

As a teenager, Remus was very pale (OP28). He aged prematurely; his face is young but lined in his late thirties (PA10), and his hair becomes steadily greyer in short periods of time (OP3).

Childhood

Remus is a half-blood (WBD). He was bitten by Fenrir Greyback when he was very young. Mr. Lupin had offended Greyback; in return, the werewolf bit his child during the full moon (HBP16). His parents tried their best to help Remus, but there was no cure for lycanthropy (PA19).

Hogwarts

Ordinarily, Remus would not have been allowed to go to Hogwarts, but Albus Dumbledore, who had recently become Headmaster, planned some precautions and set them in place, ensuring that Remus would not injure any of his fellow students on full moon nights.

In 1971, the Whomping Willow was planted over the entrance to a passageway that led to the Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade. Both the passageway and the house were built for this purpose. Madam Pomfrey led Remus to the Willow every month, and he transformed in the Shack. Dumbledore encouraged rumours that the place was haunted, and villagers grew afraid of it.

The transformations were dreadful, and terribly painful. Remus could not bite anyone other than himself, so he sustained several self-inflicted injuries every month (PA18).

Marauders

At Hogwarts, Remus was Sorted into Gryffindor (DH33). He became close friends with the three other boys in his year and house: James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew.

Remus tried to hide his lycanthropy from his friends by making up excuses every month, fearing that they would abandon him once they knew the truth. He often said, for instance, that his mother was sick and that he had to go visit her. Regardless of his best efforts, the three boys found out, and attempted to find a way to help Remus live through his transformations.

James and Sirius were the most brilliant students in the school (PA10, PA18). After three years of research, the two boys and Peter—who needed all the help that James and Sirius could give him—managed to become Animagi in their fifth year. In their animal form, the three Marauders could accompany Remus on full moon nights. They left the Hogwarts castle under the Invisibility Cloak, Peter froze the Whomping Willow by pressing the knot on its trunk, and the three Animagi went to the Shrieking Shack.

In their company, Remus felt less wolfish. His mind was more focused somehow, more human; James and Sirius were able to keep the wolf physically under control, for they both transformed into large animals. The four Marauders started growing confident and planning to explore the surroundings in their animal shapes; they left the Shack and wandered the Hogwarts grounds and Hogsmeade.

Sometimes, they barely avoided running into humans and putting them in danger. The Marauders thoughtlessly laughed about these near-misses afterwards, and did not seriously evaluate the risk of such occasions. Remus often felt guilty, but he had already put these thoughts aside by the next full moon.

The knowledge that the four students built up was put to use with the construction of the Marauder's Map, a piece of parchment that revealed several passageways and details about Hogwarts. The Map was signed with their nicknames: Remus was Moony, the werewolf; Peter was Wormtail, the rat; Sirius was Padfoot, the dog; James was Prongs, a stag (PA18).

Snape

Severus Snape was in the Marauders' year at school, as was Lily Evans. Snape mistrusted Remus, and suspected his monthly disappearances. He started investigating the matter, hoping to get the four students expelled.

At some point in their fifth year, Severus saw Pomfrey leading Remus to the passageway on the full moon; Sirius thought it would be entertaining to inform Snape of how to freeze the Whomping Willow. Severus tried to do so, but James found out what Sirius had done and rescued Snape from inside the passageway before Remus (who was already in his lupine form) noticed the approach of a human. However, Severus saw him at the end of the tunnel before James arrived. Dumbledore forbade him from revealing the truth to anyone.

Severus did not know that the entire affair had been only Sirius' idea. His already great mistrust in the Marauders grew even more from that point on (PA18); he believed that James had drawn back from the original plan due to last-minute cowardice (PA19).

James and Sirius' rivalry with Snape continued, and the two parties often hexed each other at any given opportunity. Remus often thought that his two friends were out of line, and sometimes succeeded in making them feel ashamed of themselves (OP29). He was made a Prefect in the hope that he would have a positive influence on the other Marauders, but this did not work (OP9). The four friends—usually James and Sirius, but sometimes the other two as well—often got detentions (HBP24).

In the Marauders' Defence Against the Dark Arts OWL, there was a question concerning the signs that differentiate a werewolf from a regular wolf. After finishing the examination, the four Marauders met to discuss the questions. James, mockingly worried, asked Remus if he had managed to answer the question properly; the reply was a serious, "Think I did. One: he's sitting on my chair. Two: he's wearing my clothes. Three: his name's Remus Lupin."

While Remus sat under a beech tree, revising for the upcoming Transfiguration exam, Sirius and James spotted Snape and began taunting him. Lily rushed to her friend's defence, but Severus snubbed her help; she turned against both him and James, and left the scene. During this entire exchange, Remus pretended to focus on his textbook, but he was frowning, and unable to continue reading (OP28).

First War

Remus joined the Order of the Phoenix during the First War against Voldemort (OP9), presumably at some point soon after graduating (in 1978). His role in the Order at the time is not known.

When Snape informed Dumbledore that Voldemort was planning on attacking Lily and James Potter in order to murder their young son, Harry (DH33), Albus convinced the couple to go into hiding. In 1980, he began suspecting that someone close to the couple was leaking information about them to Lord Voldemort (PA19). Sirius suspected Remus, who in turn suspected Sirius; neither seemed to have considered the possibility that Peter Pettigrew was the traitor.

At the Headmaster's suggestion, the Fidelius Charm was performed near the end of October 1981. Lily and James' first choice for a Secret-Keeper was Sirius Black; however, Sirius had the idea of giving Peter that position, as a bluff. Peter betrayed Lily and James to the Dark Lord (PA19), and they were murdered. Voldemort was unable to kill Harry, and disappeared for ten years (DH17, GF33, PS17).

Teaching

Remus taught Defence Against the Dark Arts in Harry Potter's third year (PA6). He also privately tutored the boy, teaching him the Patronus Charm (PA12). Remus was forced to resign at the end of the school year, as Snape told some Slytherins that their professor was, in fact, a werewolf (PA22). However, he remained a favourite with several students, including Dean Thomas (OP12).

The Second War

During the Second War, Remus was a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Under Dumbledore's orders he infiltrated the ranks of underground werewolves, led by Fenrir Greyback. He was attempting to shift the werewolves' loyalties from Voldemort to Dumbledore (HBP16).

In 1997, Remus married Nymphadora Tonks (DH4) and had a son, Teddy Lupin (DH25). Remus and Tonks were both killed during the Battle of Hogwarts; Harry saw their corpses in the Great Hall (DH31). Dolohov murdered Remus (BLC).
