Quintapeds, also known as Hairy MacBoons, are extremely dangerous magical creatures which inhabit the Isle of Drear, an island off the Scottish northern coast.
They have a low-slung body covered in thick reddish-brown hair, and five legs ending in a clubfoot. Quintapeds are carnivorous and prefer humans. The Isle of Drear was made unplottable for this reason.
According to wizarding folklore, Quintapeds are the outcome of a feud between two wizarding clans who originally inhabited the Isle of Drear: the McCliverts and the MacBoons. After Quintius MacBoon murdered Dugald McClivert, the McCliverts retaliated by Transfiguring all the MacBoons into monstrous five-legged creatures—the first Quintapeds.
Soon afterwards, the McCliverts noticed that the MacBoons were far more dangerous in their new form. The McCliverts attempted to Untransfigure their rivals, but did not succeed; the entire family was slaughtered. After all McCliverts had died, the MacBoons realised that there were no wizards left to perform the spell reversal.
Qunitapeds are incapable of human speech, and have resisted the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures' endeavours to capture one of them to return it to human form. The legend is therefore still unconfirmed, but, if true, the MacBoons have certainly adapted to their beast shape, and are content to remain thus (FBAZ).
