A Deluminator is a small magical device which looks a little like a Muggle cigarette lighter. When clicked, it turns off, or puts out, the lights of the surrounding area, one for every click. With a final click, the lights turn back on. The Deluminator is also referred to as a "Put-Outer".

Albus Dumbledore uses a Deluminator to conceal his visit to Privet Drive when he leaves Harry Potter at the Dursleys' doorstep (PS1). Alastor Moody borrows the object to put out the lights of Grimmauld Place when the Advance Guard brings Harry to number twelve (OP3).

After his death, Dumbledore leaves the Deluminator to Ron Weasley, who doesn't receive it until a month later. The Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, is the first to call the Deluminator by its true name (DH7).

In Ron's possession, the Deluminator reveals another ability; Ron hears Hermione's voice coming from it, saying his name (DH19).

While they are in the cellar of Malfoy Manor, Ron uses the Deluminator to provide light. It releases three spheres of light--described as looking like miniature suns--which Ron had picked up from the lamps in the tent he, Harry, and Hermione had been using. The light aids Luna in freeing Ron and Harry from their rope bonds (DH23).

Ron clicks the Deluminator again to hide the light when the prisoners are paid a visit by Draco Malfoy, but afterwords restores the three spheres. They serve to unsettle Peter Pettigrew, who was sent down by Lucius Malfoy to check on the situation in the cellar (DH23).
