Filius Flitwick is the Charms teacher at Hogwarts and Head of Ravenclaw house. His stature forces him to stand over books to see his students. He was rumoured to be a duelling champion when he was younger (CS11). According to Gilderoy Lockhart, Flitwick is quite the expert on Entrancing Enchantments (CS13).

In the Harry Potter movies, he has a goblin-like appearance, but J. K. Rowling has confirmed that he looks simply like a small old man, despite a distant dash of goblin ancestry.

Flitwick is often seen sitting at the staff table on a pile of cushions, and standing on books during his class. He has a squeaky voice and is short in stature.

Professor Filius Flitwick is a kind man, and has no blood-related prejudice--evidence of this is him bursting into tears when Ginny was taken to the Chamber of Secrets (CS16). He has a good temper and a sympathetic disposition regarding even the worst troublemakers among his students. He spoke fondly of James Potter and Sirius Black (PA10), and refused to eliminate every trace of Fred and George Weasley's swamp, claiming it to be a really good bit of magic (OP37). A small, roped-off portion of the swamp remains at the school.

Charms is among the most disorganised classes at Hogwarts. The professor himself is often seen flying across the room due to his students' gauche spellwork. Despite that, the children seem to respect Flitwick: not even Draco treated him with contempt (PS10).

Allegiance

Flitwick does, however, show signs of annoyance at the Dementors' presence at Hogwarts (PA10), and enjoyed a small bit of revenge against Dolores Umbridge by refusing to get rid of the Weasley twins' Weasleys' Wildfire Whiz-bangs and thus forcing her to do so ("Thank you so much, Professor! I could have got rid of the sparklers myself, of course, but I wasn't sure whether or not I had the authority.") (OP28).

In fact, it seems that the Charms professor quietly undermined Umbridge's regime as much as he can. He didn't oppose Hermione Granger's idea of going with other students to the Hog's Head, and simply advised her to take her own glasses (OP16). The Trio saw him speaking with McGonagall and Sprout in hushed tones outside his classroom (OP25). He gave a box of sugar mice to Harry Potter after the latter's interview regarding the rebirth of Lord Voldemort was published at The Quibbler (OP26).

Flitwick was willing to participate in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, joining forces with the Order of the Phoenix against the Death Eaters. When he tried to fetch Snape, however, Severus Stunned him, and ordered Hermione and Luna to take care of the old wizard. A large bruise resulted from this incident (HBP29).

Services at Hogwarts

Flitwick has been teaching at Hogwarts at least since the Marauders' time. He oversaw their Defence Against the Dark Arts OWLs; when he Summoned the exams, the amount of parchment threw him back from his table, from where he had to be rescued by students (OP28).

The Charms professor is in charge of decorating the Great Hall with live fairies and other ornaments, along with McGonagall (PS12).

Flitwick was one of the teachers selected by Dumbledore to protect the Philosopher's Stone: he enchanted hundreds of keys to fly; only one unlocked the door to the next room. A broomstick was placed in the room, and the keys violently chased anyone who mounted it (PS16.

He also taught the Hogwarts castle doors to recognise a picture of Azkaban escapee Sirius Black after the convict somehow gained entrance to Gryffindor Tower, frightening Ron and causing nearly everyone at the school to panic (PA14).

After Dumbledore's death, when Minerva McGonagall wondered whether to close the school, Flitwick suggested that she consult the board of governors, and was of the opinion that Albus should be buried in the school grounds. He also agreed with Harry that no student should be sent home before the burial (HBP29).

Battle of Hogwarts

On the night of the Battle of Hogwarts, Flitwick opened the entrance to the Ravenclaw common room in order to allow Alecto Carrow to patrol it, waiting for the arrival of Harry Potter. Harry and McGonagall overpowered Alecto and her brother Amycus before long, and Minerva summoned the Heads of House to organise the castle's defences with the help of a Patronus Charm.

Flitwick met McGonagall in the corridor where she was duelling against Severus Snape. Flitwick intervened with a spell—presumably piertotum locomotor—that caused a suit of armour to attack Snape. He attempted to chase Severus along with Sprout and McGonagall, to no avail; the Headmaster flew out the window.

McGonagall asked Flitwick to cast the strongest defences possible upon the castle. He used complex incantations, including protego horribilis, to strenghten Hogwarts and empower the grounds against the upcoming attackers. Harry interrupted him to ask if Flitwick was aware of the whereabouts of the diadem of Ravenclaw; he did not (DH30).
