Prefects are Hogwarts students selected to keep order and discipline over the school. They are chosen in their fifth year, two from each house, and receive their badges before the beginning of the school year, along with the yearly school letter containing the list of textbooks for the upcoming terms (OP9). These students are normally pupils who have demonstrated exemplary behaviour, responsibility and capability to follow rules and discipline other students.

Prefects are not allowed to deduct points from other prefects (OP28); they can do so from other students, however (JKRW).

They are under the Head Boy and Girl's jurisdiction.
