The potion to clean wounds is a purple liquid which is highly effective, though it smokes and stings when applied. Madam Pomfrey uses it on Harry's shoulder after he fights the Hungarian Horntail during the First Task, grumbling all the while about the dangers students are exposed to (GF20).
