Pixies are mischievous magical creatures most commonly found in Cornwall, England. They are small (up to eight inches high), humanoid in shape and electric blue in colour. Their faces are pointed (CS6). They can fly, despite their lack of wings. They can converse with each other in a high-pitched chatter that is unintelligible to humans. Unlike the imp, a species they are commonly confused with, real pixies bear their young live. They enjoy practical jokes and tricks of all kinds, and take special delight in seizing humans by the ears and set them down on tall buildings or trees (FBAZ).
Gilderoy Lockhart brings a cage full of Cornish pixies to his first second-year Defence Against the Dark Arts class. He presents the covered cage with a pompous speech that students are to face their worst fears during class, and is greeted with a snort from Seamus Finnigan when he lifts the cover. Seamus justifies himself with the remark that pixies are not very dangerous, to which Lockhart replies that they can be "devilish tricky little blighters".[1] He then releases the creatures, which promptly use this chance to wreak havoc in the classroom. They shatter windows, spray ink, tear pictures and books, upend the waste bin, throw bags and lift Neville Longbottom up by the ears to leave him hanging from the candelabra. Most of the class hide under the desks. Lockhart tries to subdue the pixies with the incantation "Peskipiksi Pesternomi", upon which one of the creatures grabs his wand and throws it out of the window. Lockhart dives under his desk and is almost squashed by Neville when the candelabra falls down. The class dashes outside a soon as the bell rings. Lockhart catches the Trio near the door, advises them to capture the rest of the pixies and leaves. Ron and Harry complain, but Hermione claims that Lockhart only wanted to give them "some hands-on experience". She catches two pixies at once with a Freezing Charm (CS6).

- ↑ As the unfolding scene demostrates, this is one of the few correct and unexaggerated remarks Lockhart has ever made. However, this does not make pixies Dark creatures. Seamus is therefore right to question Lockhart.
