Body-Bind Curse

The Body-Bind Curse is a spell that immobilises the person against whom it is cast. Its incantation is "Petrificus Totalus".

Mentions of the Body-Bind Curse in the series include:

• Hermione Granger casts the charm on Neville Longbottom to prevent him from delaying the Trio's departure for the third-floor corridor to stop Severus Snape from stealing the Philosopher's Stone (OP16).
• Draco Malfoy, after Gryffindor wins the House Cup during his first year in Hogwarts, is described as someone "who couldn't have looked more stunned and horrified if he'd just had the Body-Bind Curse put on him" (PS17).
• Sirius Black immobilises Snape after James Potter attacks the Slytherin using the Levicorpus spell, preventing him from retaliating (OP28).
• During the Battle of the Department of Mysteries (OP35):
  • Harry Potter casts the spell on a Death Eater in the Time Room, right after the latter raises his wand to attack the student.
  • Harry uses Petrificus Totalus twice on Antonin Dolohov. The first time, the Gryffindor seizes advantage of the Death Eater's momentary distraction, caused by a loud crash. The second time, Harry immobilises Dolohov to prevent him from attacking Sirius.
• Draco Malfoy casts the spell on Harry Potter when he realises the Gryffindor is hinding in the luggage rack of the Hogwarts Express compartment the Slytherin was occupying (HBP7).
• Harry Potter uses the Body-Bind Curse against the Inferi in the Cave, preventing several of them from climbing to the rock where he and Albus Dumbledore were standing (HBP26).
• During the Battle of the Astronomy Tower (HBP27, HBP28):
  • It is possible to assume Dumbledore non-verbally uses the Body-Bind Curse to immobilise Harry right before Draco Malfoy Disarms the headmaster.
  • Harry casts the spell on the brutal-faced Death Eater, last of the party led by Severus Snape that flees from the top of the Astronomy Tower.
  • Harry uses the incantation on Fenrir Greyback after the werewolf jumps on top of him.
• Fred threatens to use this spell on Molly if he ever gets married, to prevent her from organising the party (DH8).
• Hermione uses the Body-Bind Curse against Dolohov during the confrontation in Tottenham Court Road (DH9).
• During the Battle of Hogwarts (DH30, DH31, DH32, DH34, DH35):
  • Ron attempts to cast a Body-Bind Curse on Crabbe in the Room of Requirement, but misses.
  • Parvati Patil hits Antonin Dolohov with this spell while they duel in a corridor.
  • Voldemort uses this spell to keep Neville still while the Sorting Hat burns on top of the teenager's head. Neville breaks free of the curse shortly afterwards, protected by Harry's sacrifice, and slays Nagini.
