Characteristics

Percy is tall and thin; he has flame-red hair, wears horn-rimmed spectacles. He is very ambitious and pompous.

Childhood

Before going to Hogwarts, Percy was taught at home by Molly. According to Ron, he was very rule-abiding and humourless, even as a child. Considering how distant he seems from his brothers and sister as a young adult, it seems likely that he was somewhat alienated by his siblings as a child.

Hogwarts

Percy as a first- to fourth-year

Little is known about Percy's first four years at Hogwarts. He was clearly very well behaved and appears, from his exam results, to have been both bright and hard-working. He was also already clearly ambitious at this point: Ron tells Harry that Percy wishes to be Minister for Magic. In his first year, Percy was sorted into Gryffindor.

Percy as a fifth-year

In his fifth year at Hogwarts, Percy was elected a Gryffindor Prefect, which makes his mother very proud and warrants the purchase of a new owl, Hermes. This appointment as Prefect was something of an ego boost for Percy, who became even more pompous and seemed to enjoy his power too much: a foreshadowing of later events. Percy took his OWLs at the end of this year.

Percy as a sixth-year

In Percy's sixth year he was still a Prefect. He discovered during the summer that he had achieved twelve OWLs, the most one can obtain (CS4). He also behaved oddly, and sent lots of letters (CS3). At school, he soon developed a romantic relationship with Penelope Clearwater, a pretty girl in his year. He was deeply affected when she was petrified by the Basilisk, and this was compounded with his sister Ginny's involvement in the atrocity.

Percy as a seventh year

Percy's seventh year at Hogwarts was less eventful than his sixth. He was chosen as Head Boy, and Penelope is Head Girl. He also took his NEWTs that year and, considering his next career move, appears to have done very well indeed.

After Hogwarts

Immediately after leaving Hogwarts, Percy went to work at the Ministry of Magic, in the Department of International Magical Co-operation, as a Junior and was then promoted to Mr Crouch's personal assistant. After working on menial tasks such as revising cauldron thickness and magic carpet regulations, Percy spent much of the year filling in for Crouch at the Triwizard Tournament, while Crouch was 'ill'. Percy didn't manage to notice that his boss was, in fact, under the influence of the Imperius Curse.

After this episode, Percy was offered a position as Junior Assistant to the Minister. When his parents suggested that this may be Fudge's way of getting a spy in the Weasley family to check up on their affiliation with the Order of the Phoenix, Percy was so insulted that he broke all ties with his family. He moved to London and refused to even acknowledge his family, apart from to send a letter of congratulations to Ron on his appointment as a prefect, and to warn him to avoid Harry Potter and to stay on the side of the Ministry.

He reconciled with his family in 1998, in the Battle of Hogwarts, and when he met Pius Thicknesse during the final battle, Percy announced that he is leaving the Ministry. Fred realised that that was a joke, and was still laughing about it when he died (DH31). Percy was absolutely devastated, and helped carry Fred's body to safety. Later in the battle, he duelled Augustus Rookwood (DH32).

Percy was a high-ranked official in the Ministry during Kingsley's administration (BLC).

Trivia

  • Percy is often plagued by his younger brothers, Fred and George. They transfigured his Head Boy badge to read: 'Bighead Boy' (PA4).
  • He bet his girlfriend Penelope ten Galleons that Gryffindor would win at a Quidditch game, before hurriedly informing Harry that he had to win, as Percy did not in fact have ten Galleons.

Fandom

Percy is generally portrayed in fanon as he is in canon: arrogant, pompous, irritating, smug and unhealthily ambitious and career-driven.
