Peppermint Toads are sweets that can be bought at Honeydukes.
When Harry Potter gets up after a night he spent awake thinking about Sirius Black's supposed betrayal of his parents, he finds the Gryffindor common room completely empty except for Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Ron is eating a Peppermint Toad and massaging his stomach (PA11). He probably bought the sweet the day before on the last trip to Hogsmeade before Christmas, on which they overheard a conversation about Sirius (PA10). A few months later, Fred and George Weasley sneak into Hogsmeade to buy food and drinks to celebrate Gryffindor's victory against Ravenclaw at Quidditch. When they return, George throws Peppermint Toads into the crowd (PA14).
