Passwords

Passwords are the standard way to gain access to restricted areas of the Hogwarts castle.

Headmaster's office

The Headmaster's office, while occupied by Albus Dumbledore, is commonly sealed with passwords that consist of sweet names.

• "Sherbet Lemon" (UK edition) or "Lemon Drop" (US edition, CS11)
• "Cockroach Cluster" (GF29)
• "Fizzing Whizzbee" (OP22)
• "Acid Pops" (HBP9, HBP10)
• "Toffee éclairs" (HBP20, HBP23)

Severus Snape sets "Dumbledore" as the password to the office (DH33).

Gryffindor common room

The Gryffindor common room, whose entrance is guarded by the Fat Lady (and, for a brief period in Harry's third year, by Sir Cadogan), has typically random passwords.

• "Pig snout" (PS9, PS10)
• "Wattlebird" (CS5)
• "Fortuna major" (PA5)
• "Scurvy cur" (PA11)
• "Oddsbodikins" (PA12)
• "Flibbertigibbet" (PA15)
• "Balderdash" (GF12, GF14, GF17, GF19, GF21)
• "Fairy lights" (GF22, GF23)
• "Banana fritters" (GF25)
• "Mimbulus mimbletonia" (OP11, OP13)
• "Dilligrout" (HBP12)
• "Baubles" (HBP15)
• "Abstinence" (HBP17)
• "Tapeworm" (HBP23)
• "Quid agis" (HBP24)

When Harry Potter informs the Fat Lady that rumours of Dumbledore's death are true, she lets him in without asking for the password (HBP29).

Other passwords

• "Pure-blood" is the password to the Slytherin common room when Harry Potter and Ron Weasley visit on Christmas 1992 while disguised as Gregory Goyle and Vincent Crabbe (CS12).
• "Pine fresh" is the password to the Prefects' bathroom in the school year of 1994–1995; Cedric gives it to Harry so that the latter can work out the Golden Egg clue (GF23, GF25).
• The tunnel that leads to the Chamber of Secrets opens to the word "open" when said in Parseltongue to a tap in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. At the end of the tunnel, a set of doors with the same password leads into the Chamber (CS16, DH31).
• The Ravenclaw common room has no password; in order to enter it, one must answer a question (DH30).
