The Order of Merlin is an award given to witches or wizards that have accomplished great deeds. There are three different levels of the prize: First Class, Second Class and Third Class.

Originally, the Order of Merlin was a group of wizards with an interest in helping Muggles, and promptly created rules banning the use of magic upon them. It was founded, as the name suggests, by Merlin himself (FW).

It is notable Severus Snape was almost awarded an Order of Merlin, Second Class, by Cornelius Fudge for his capture of Sirius Black and rescue of the Trio from the convinct's hands. This honour, however, was declied after the fugitive once again escaped from the Ministry's grasp (PA22).
