Ollivander
Occupation wandmaker
Portrayer in the movies John Hurt
First appearance in canon Diagon Alley (PS)

Mr. Ollivander is the owner of Ollivanders, the wand shop in Diagon Alley. He is an old man with wide, pale eyes. He is described as a "creepy" character as he hardly ever blinks and often says things that make others uncomfortable. He has an excellent memory; he remembers every wand he has sold and every person to whom he has sold wands (PS5).

Mr. Ollivander only offers three different cores in the wands he sells -- phoenix feather, unicorn hair, and dragon heartstring. This is because he believes that they are the three most powerful choices for wand cores; many other alternatives are offered elsewhere in the wizarding world (HCG).

When Mr. Ollivander sold Harry his wand, he revealed that the phoenix whose feather forms the core of the wand that chose Harry gave his feather to one other wand—that of Lord Voldemort. Mr. Ollivander continued to say that one could expect "great things" from Harry, as Voldemort's deeds, while horrible, were also powerful and "great" (PS5). After Harry had left his shop, Ollivander wrote to Dumbledore, the owner of the phoenix from whom the feathers that formed the cores of Harry and Voldemort's wands, informing the headmaster that Harry had bought the wand that was brother to Voldemort's wand (GF36).

Mr. Ollivander weighed the wands of the Triwizard Tournament champions—i.e., he ensured that each wand was perfectly functional—before the tournament began. Once again, he took his time with Harry's wand, referencing the day when Harry bought it (GF18).

Mr. Ollivander disappeared without a trace shortly after the Second War began; there was no sign of struggle in his shop (HBP6). He was kidnapped by Voldemort, who forced him to explain the wand core connection between his and Harry's wands. When even a borrowed wand inexplicably refused to injure Harry, the Dark Lord tortured Ollivander (DH5) and sought to contact Gregorovitch (DH7).
