The Prophecy
Before Neville was born, Professor Trelawney made the Prophecy about the one that would have the power to vanquish Voldemort (he would be born to parents who have defied him three times, at the end of the seventh month). After the end of July, 1980, it became clear that the only boys that would apply to the characteristics described in it were Neville and Harry. Eventually, Voldemort decided that he was more interested on the Potters' child. They went into hiding, protected by a Fidelius Charm. It is unknown whether the Longbottoms did the same.
Childhood
Neville used to live with his parents, and little is known about the fifteen months he spent with them. After Voldemort killed James and Lily Potter and failed in the attempt to kill Harry, some of the Death Eaters went to the Longbottoms' house and tortured Frank and Alice in an attempt to finding out something about their Master's disappearence. The couple didn't die, but became mad after the long exposure to the curse. Barty Crouch Jr., Rabastan Lestrange, Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange were convicted to life-long imprisonment in Azkaban. Alice and Frank were sent to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, and have been living in their Closed Ward ever since (GF30).
After his parents went to the hospital, Neville started living with his paternal grandmother, Augusta Longbottom. Augusta is very strict and always wished that Neville would live up to his father's talent. Although he is descended from a old pure-blood family, it took more time than the usual for Neville to show signs of magic.
Hogwarts
Neville as a first-year
Neville Longbottom's first year was one of constant teasing and strugges. He was described as a round-faced boy. Neville was sorted intoGryffindor. He often lost his pet toad, Trevor.
Neville found his classes harder than many of the other first years because of his low confidence in himself. He only truly excelled in his Herbology class. Neville struggled the most in his potion class where he was easily frightened into making many mistakes. Neville was a forgetful boy; he found it hard to remember many things. His grandmother got Neville a Remembrall so that he could recall things more easily.
He learned to fly without much success. Neville's first time on a broom left him with a broken wrist. He had been nervous in the beginning and found it hard to get his broom to leave the ground; Harry thought that it was because Neville himself didn't want to learn to fly. He flew up into the air, he fell off his broom at a height of twenty feet.
However, near the end of the year, Neville proves that strong character and the bravery of a Gryffindor are within him when he stands up to the Trio, who are leaving Gryffindor Tower after curfew in order to save the Philosopher's Stone. For his bravery, he is awarded ten points at the Ending Feast , winning the House Cup for Gryffindor.
Neville as a second-year
Neville continued to have unfortunate experiences during his classes; in their first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson of the year, Gilderoy Lockhart, Quirrell's replacement, let a cage full of Cornish pixies loose, and two of them picked Neville up by the ears and hung him from a chandelier, which later gave way, falling to the ground with Neville (CS6). When Hermione interrupted Professor Binns to ask him about the Chamber of Secrets, Neville's elbow sliped off of his desk (CS9). While in Transfiguration toward the end of the year, Neville's wand slipped during Transfiguration, and he Vanished one of the legs of his desk (CS16).
Neville displayed his prevailing lack of faith in himself when he purchased several protective talismans to ward off the Heir of Slytherin. When it was pointed out that he is a pureblood, and therefore not in danger, he retorted in fear that "everyone knows I'm almost a Squib" (CS11).

Neville becomes a badass during his seventh year.
Adulthood
After graduating from Hogwarts, Neville became the Herbology professor at the school (DHE). He kept in touch with Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione. He may have had a romantic relationship with Luna Lovegood (MSNBC), but he eventually married Hannah Abbott, and lived with her above the Leaky Cauldron (CH).
Trivia
- Neville snores in his sleep; in their second year, when Harry comes back in the middle of the night from the Forbidden Forest with Ron after narrowly escaping the Acromantulas, he ignores "Neville's snuffling snores from the corner" (CS15).
- His parents were Aurors; they were tortured by Death Eaters (GF30) after Lord Voldemort's disappearance, after which they resided in the Closed Ward at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries . They never recovered (MSNBC).
