Muggle-born wizards are the occasional offspring of Muggle parents. They are therefore the direct opposite of Squibs; unlike them, however, Muggle-borns are not rare. Their powers and abilities are not lesser due to their parentage, despite the low opinion some pure-bloods have of them.

Prejudiced wizards such as Draco Malfoy and Walburga Black often refer to Muggle-borns as Mudbloods, a highly offensive term.

More tolerant and talent-oriented wizards such as Horace Slughorn do not display open prejudice. The Potions master's statement regarding Lily Evans, however, is a prime example of how a significant portion of the wizarding community feels towards Muggle-borns: "Your mother was Muggle-born, of course. Couldn't believe it when I found out. Thought she must have been pure-blood, she was so good." When Harry Potter aggressively points out that one his best friends is a brilliant witch of the same blood status, Slughorn muses, "Funny how that sometimes happens, isn't it?" (HBP4).

Special messengers are sent to talk and explain about Hogwarts to Muggle-borns' parents, instead of sending them an owl with an acceptance letter, which would easily and surely make them believe that it's some sort of a bad joke (WBD, DH33).

Muggle-borns are born when someone have a witch or wizard somewhere on their family tree, in some cases many, many generations back. The gene re-surfaces in some unexpected places (BLC).
