Ministry of Magic Classification

The official Ministry of Magic classification sorts every known magical creature into one of the three following categories: beasts, beings and spirits (FBi). The Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures at the Ministry of Magic also assigns a classification for the perceived dangerousness of every beast, being and spirit (FBc).

Creatures have to fit the following criteria to be sorted into the three groups:

  • Beings: All creatures that are able to understand the laws of the magical community and bear responsibility in shaping them.
  • Beasts: All creatures that are not able to fulfill the requirements above, due to lack of intelligence or an unontrollably violent nature.
  • Spirits: All ghosts, who objected to being classified as 'beings', when they were obviously 'has-beens'.

The existing classification, which was introduced in 1811, is the result of a dispute spanning several centuries. Until today, the classification of certain creatures, such as werewolves, is under constant debate (FBi).

The classification according to dangerousness has five categories (FBc):

  • X: Boring
  • XX: Harmless / may be domesticated
  • XXX: Competent wizards should cope
  • XXXX: Dangerous / requires specialist knowledge / skilled wizard may handle <ref> Some creatures in this category, such as unicorns, centaurs and merpeople, do not have an aggressive nature, but need to be treated respectfully nonetheless. This rating is also given to the phoenix, because it is hard to domesticate, and the Snidget, which is not dangerous in itself but whose capture or injury is punished severely (FBAZ).</ref>
  • XXXXX: Known wizard killer / impossible to train or domesticate.<ref>In his edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Harry Potter adds: 'or anything Hagrid likes' (FBc).</ref><ref>Werewolves are given this rating, but it applies only at the full moon (FBAZ).</ref>
