The Malfoy family is a very wealthy and influential pure-blood family. They typically are sorted into Slytherin House at Hogwarts. Malfoy Manor is their family seat.
The Malfoys have a long history of being associated with the Dark Arts. In the First and Second Wars, Lucius Malfoy was a Death Eater; in the Second War, his son Draco is also a Death Eater. The Malfoys escaped persecution after the First War by stating that they were "bewitched" by the Imperius Curse (PS6, ).
As Dobby worked for the Malfoy family, he often did things that displeased them which would result of punishing himself. Dobby admitted that they often reminded him when he needed to do extra punishing (CS2).
Hagrid says that the Malfoys are "rotten ter the core, the whole family, everyone knows that. No Malfoy's worth listenin' ter. Bad blood, that's what it is." (CS4).
