Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody is a retired Auror and a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Barty Crouch Jr. impersonated him as a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in Harry Potter's fourth year at Hogwarts).
Evan Rosier somehow chopped a bit off Moody's nose upon his capture (GF30).
Moody's past as an Auror—he was renouned, in fact, as the best of them there ever was—has made him paranoid regarding dark wizards. Crouch's office was full of dark magic detection gadgets and other instruments, including the Foe Glass and a seven-lock chest at the bottom of which the real Moody was trapped (GF35).
Moody went to number four, Privet Drive with the Advance Guard to take Harry to number twelve, Grimmauld Place (OP3). There, he complained that his magical eye hadn't been working well ever since Crouch wore it.
