The MacBoons were a wizarding family that, along with the McCliverts, inhabited the Isle of Drear. The family was known for its ineptitude at magic. According to legend, a drunken wizarding duel between the heads of the families Quintius MacBoon and Dugald McClivert led to the death of the latter. The McCliverts retaliated by Transfiguring all the MacBoons into five-legged creatures.

Soon afterwards, the McCliverts noticed that the MacBoons were far more dangerous in their new form—that of vicious Quintapeds that fed on human flesh. The McCliverts attempted to Untransfigure their rivals, but did not succeed; the entire family was slaughtered. After all McCliverts had died, the MacBoons realised that there were no wizards left to perform the spell reversal.

To this day, the Isle of Drear is the only place in the world inhabited by Quintapeds, also dubbed 'Hairy MacBoons' because of the legend. Drear was made unplottable for this reason.

The creatures are incapable of human speech, and have resisted the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures' endeavours to capture one of them to return it to human form. The legend is therefore still unconfirmed, but, if true, the MacBoons have certainly adapted to their animal shape, and are content to remain thus (FBAZ).
