Luna has waist-long dirty blonde hair, protuberant grey eyes, and with very faint eyebrows. She does not blink much, giving her a permanently surprised look. Luna's accessories are unique and often rather odd, and include radish earrings and a necklace made of Butterbeer corks. She often tucks her wand behind her ear (OP10).

Luna is often called "Loony" because of her different, often wild, views, including her belief in strange, nonexistent creatures, such as Nargles and Crumple-Horned Snorkacks. These reflect the beliefs of her father, editor of The Quibbler, which is a wizarding newspaper resembling a tabloid and is full of ridiculous assertions and far-fetched news stories. However, despite the ridicule others subject her to, she stands up for what she believes in, remaining indifferent to other people's skepticism and judgment. She has a disturbing habit of speaking uncomfortable truths and is patient and accepting of others, even when people steal her belongings for fun.

Childhood

Luna's mother died in a freak accident when the girl was ten; an experiment of Mrs. Lovegood's went wrong, resulting in her death. Since then, Luna has lived with her father, the editor of the Quibbler. The two live near Ottery St. Catchpole, as do the Weasleys (GF5).

Luna's attitude toward her mother's death is fairly pragmatic: while she is sad that her mother is dead, she is grateful she still has her father.

Hogwarts

When she arrived at Hogwarts, Luna was Sorted into Ravenclaw. She has few friends in her House, but became close to Ginny Weasley, who then introduced her to Harry Potter, Neville Longbottom, Hermione Granger, and her brother Ron when the girls began their fourth year at the school.

Immediately the Trio and Neville are surprised and confused by the girl's behaviour during their trip on the Hogwarts Express. She randomly gave them information about their own deeds ("You went to the Yule Ball with Padma Patil"), and read The Quibbler upside down. She found Ron's joke about making Goyle do lines as a detention endlessly amusing, and at the moment the lights turned off, she began staring at everyone in her compartment. Once they left the train, Harry started to worry about seeing horses that no one else could see and the girl told him that she could also see them. For obvious reasons, this didn't make the boy feel reassured (OP10).

Luna showed her point of view, saying that she didn't think that Hagrid was a good teacher, and when she said so, the Trio and Ginny retort in a rude way, but she didn't seem to mind much (OP11). Th next time Harry saw her, she was leaving her Herbology class with Ginny, and told him that she believed he was right about Voldemort's return. She didn't seem annoyed when she noticed that Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil were laughing at her, even though she thought they were laughing about her words and not her radish earrings.

Luna gets irritated when people try to deny her beliefs; when Hermione told her that there is no such thing as the Crumple-Horned Snorkack, she just got frustrated with her (HBP12).

At the meeting in Hog's Head, Luna went all by herself to the meeting Hermione was organising at the Hog's Head. When she learned that Cornelius Fudge had sent Dolores Umbridge to Hogwarts in order to prevent them from getting proper lessons because he was afraid that Dumbledore would create himself an army to attack the Ministry of Magic, she merely said that it made sense since the Minister for Magic has his own army of Heliopaths (OP16).

During the first meeting of Dumbledore's Army, Luna had an inconsistent performance with the spell Expelliarmus; sometimes she managed to spin the wand out of her partner's hand, other times only managing to cause his hair to stand on end. When Ernie tried to disentangle himself from his robes, she started listening to the conversation between Cho Chang and Harry, who were talking about Marietta Edgecombe. While Cho said that she would be coming to the meeting, despite the fact that her parents had forbidden her to do anything that could upset Umbridge, Luna bragged about how her father supported any anti-Ministry of Magic action. She started to talk about how many goblins Fudge has assassinated (in reference to an article from The Quibbler, which she read on the Hogwarts Express) and accused him of using the Department of Mysteries to breed new poisons to feed to his opponents (OP18).

The day of Ron's first Quidditch game as a keeper, Luna came to their table during breakfast with a hat shaped like a lion head; the life-size figure roared every time she tapped it with her wand. She told the Weasley boy that she supported Gryffindor, and wished him good luck after complaining that she didn't have the time to add a serpent for the lion to chew, representing Slytherin (OP19).

Luna was the first to arrive at the Room of Requirement on the last D.A. meeting before Christmas, and she seemed to enjoy Dobby's decoration for the holidays, although she complained that mistletoe is often infested with Nargles (OP21).

After the mass break-out from Azkaban, Hermione contacted Rita Skeeter and asked the journalist to write and interview Harry on his story of how Voldemort had come back. Luna asked her father to publish it in The Quibbler. While Hermione told Rita and Harry about her plans, Luna just sat with them in the Three Broomsticks, singing Weasley Is Our King under her breath. During the interview she mentioned that her father thought that the Daily Prophet was a terrible newspaper, and that he only printed stories about what he thought people wanted to read, making Rita snort out loud. Skeeter asked how much she would be paid for submitting her story to the paper, and Luna replied her father didn't pay people to write to the magazine. She later said that her dad would be pleased about the interview (OP25).

Luna warned Harry that her father was waiting for an important story on Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, and that he might have to wait until the following edition. When the magazine with his interview is had been published, Luna asked her father to send Harry a free copy and walked up to the Gryffindor table during breakfast to tell him the magazine started being sold on the following day and that all those letters are probably from readers. By dinner time, she came to tell him that the magazine had never sold so fast and that her dad was already reprinting the edition (although the Lovegoods can't believe people were more interested in this than on Crumple-Horned Snorkacks) (OP26).

For the final match of the Quidditch season, Luna replaced her lion hat with an eagle one (OP30).

Battle of the Department of Mysteries

After Harry's dream, featuring Sirius Black being tortured in the Department of Mysteries, Ginny and Luna found him screaming with Ron and Hermione. The group decided to use the two fourth-years as a look-out so Harry and Hermione could use Umbridge's fireplace to try to contact the Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix to see whether Sirius had left the house or not. Luna asked they meant Stubby Boardman when they said "Sirius" and wondered how the group would get to the Ministry. The girls stood on the either side of the Headmistress' office, telling everyone that someone had let off a load of Garroting Gas (OP32).

When the High Inquisitor finds the couple using her fire, her Inquisitorial Squad bring Ron, Luna, Ginny and Neville inside. While Ginny tries to release herself from the sixth year Slythering girl that got hold of her, Hermione tries to break free from Millicent Bulstrode, Neville becomes more and more purple under Crabbe's grip and Ron struggles against Warrington. Luna stays standing by the side of her captor, looking bored. But even the Ravenclaw was surprised when Hermione tells Dolores that they were trying to contact Professor Dumbledore (OP32).

After Harry and Hermione lead the Headmistress into the Forbidden Forest promising to show her the weapon Dumbledore asked them to create, the other kids easily get rid of their captors, using jinxes they learned on the D.A. classes. Harry and Ron try to stop Neville, Ginny and Luna from coming to the Department of Mysteries, but the arguments their Gryffindor mates use shut Harry and Ron up. As they begin arguing about how to getthere, Luna says that she thought that they had decided to fly. As the Weasley boy started getting annoyed and saying that even if she can fly without a broom most of they can't, she points out that the thestrals can fly and are good with finding places. So, as more and more of them arrive attracted by the smell of blood, the six of them set off for London (OP33).

Luna helps Ron, Hermione and Ginny to sit upon the winged-horses and when they arrive is the only one that manages to dismount smoothly. She enters in the Phone box with the others and they get inside the Ministry Atrium. As Harry leads them to the door of the Department of Mysteries, she looks surprised. Once they get inside the Brain Room, Luna says that her father always thought that they were breeding Aquavirius Maggots before Hermione points out that they are brains. As they walk inside the Death Room, Luna tells Harry that she can hear the voices near the veil as well, and after the knife Sirius gave Harry melted while trying to open a room, she wonders what could be inside (OP34).

As they meet the Death Eaters in the Hall of Prophecy, they all raise their wands while Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange try to talk to Harry. They start exploding the prophecies while trying to escape; Luna and Ginny run out of the room with their arms hiding their faces against the shattering glass. Ron and the two girls enter a different room from the one Hermione, Harry and Neville do, and they start to look for each other. Later they find out that the three of them entered the Planet Room with four of the Death Eaters following them and one of the dark wizards got a hold of Ginny's ankle and broke it, although Luna exploded Pluto upon his face, and says she doesn't know what happened to Ron, but he is giggling about everything he sees. She tries to help Ginny to stand, and although the red-head refuses her help, when she collapses Luna holds her.

Neville, Harry and Luna try to lock all the doors around them, so the Death Eaters won't be able to get in, but one of them manages to attack the Ravenclaw while she's doing it (OP35). Luna is sent to the Hospital Wing with the others as soon as she gets back into Hogwarts, but she's released almost as soon as she comes in. She keeps on visiting the others, and as the Daily Prophet printed Harry's interview from The Quibbler, she tells the lot that her dad sold it to them. They have decided to go to Sweden during their holidays to chase Crumple-Horned Snorkacks (OP37).

Harry wanders around the castle instead of going to the end of term feast; when he turns towards the Fat Lady's corridor, he sees Luna fastening a note to a board on the wall. She says that she is not at the feast because she has lost all her things; people hid them to mock her. She is therefore putting up notices, because it is the last night of term and she needs everything back.

Harry feels sorry for her, and offers to help look for the objects. She voices her confidence that everything will show up at some point, and asks why he isn't at the feast. Harry says simply that he did not feel like going; she understands his reasoning, mentions Sirius, and the boy is reminded that she is one of the few students he knows who can see Thestrals (OP10).

Luna tells him that still feels sad from time to time about her mother's death but she knows it's not like she'll never see her mother again and reminds him of the voices they heard beyong the veil. Luna goes away, and somehow Harry feels a bit better (OP37)

Luna as a fifth-year

Luna once more travels on the Hogwarts Express with Harry, Neville, Ron and Hermione. People stare at the girl and Neville while they are trying to find a compartment. Longbottom thinks that it's because they are with Harry, but the boy-who-lived points out that it's probably because they took part in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. As soon as they find themselves seats, Luna asks if they are going to carry on with D.A. meetings -- she misses them, she says, because it was like having friends. When Romilda Vane walks inside and invites Harry to join her and her friends in another comparment, Luna is wearing her Spectrespecs; the fourth year insults Harry's choice of company, but he defends Neville and Luna, saying that they are his friends and he would rather sit with them than with "cooler people." This expression of friendship pleases Luna. When the boy-who-lived gets distracted with his thoughts, she asks him if a Wrackspurt has gotten him (HBP7).

For the first Quidditch match of the season -- Gryffindor vs. Slytherin - Luna breaks out her lion-topped hat once again (HBP14). As Ron starts dating Lavender and makes fun of Hermione's way of asking Professor McGonagall questions, Luna finds her friend inside one of the girls bathrooms and tries to comfort her. As Harry reaches them with Hermione's books, the girl tells him that at first she thought it was Moaning Myrtle but it turned out to be Hermione. The boy explains that the Gryffindor girl had a row with Ron, and Luna says that she had noticed that even if Ron can be very funny, he also can be unkind. The Chosen One asks her how her term is going, and she says she is feeling lonely without the D.A., but that Ginny is being nice to her and stopped a couple of boys from calling her Loony in their Transfiguration classes.

Harry asks her if she would like to go to Slughorn's Christmas party with him, just as friends, and the girl gets very excited at the prospect. She tells him that she'd love to go with him - as friends - and that no one had ever asked her to a party before - as friends. She asks if she should dye one of her eyebrows for the party, as Harry has one blond eyebrow, but he tells her not to. Peeves shows up and overhears the conversation then he leaves singing "Potty invited Loony to the party, Potty luuuurvs Loony". Soon enough, the whole school knows that they are attending the party together. Ron looks very surprised that even though Harry can take anyone he wants he's taking Luna but Ginny congratulates her and says that the girl is very excited about the party.

Luna wears a set of silver spangled robes to the party, which causes a certain amount of giggling from the people passing by. As they walk to Slughorn's office, Harry asks her if she heard that there might be a vampire among the guests, and Luna asks him if he's talking about Rufus Scrimgeour, since her father had written a long article about the new Minister for Magic being a vampire but had been forbidden to publish it. He walks around the guests with the girl, as soon as they meet Hermione - who's hiding from Cormac McLaggen - Luna starts a conversation with Sybill Trelawney. As Slughorn and Snape arrive and the conversation leads Harry to say that he'd like to be an Auror, Luna advises him not to since all Aurors are part of the Rotfang Conspiracy. As Argus Filch brings Draco Malfoy inside and Snape leaves to punish him, Harry tells Luna that he's going to the bathroom and leaves the girl talking to the Divination teacher (HBP15).

McGonagall allows Luna to commentate on a Quidditch match, Gryffindor vs. Huffepuff. The girl can't keep track of what's happening in the game, or remember the name of the players. She calls Cadwallader "Bibble" and "Buggins" before the teacher corrects her. She also decides to talk about Harry's argument with McLaggen instead of giving the spectators an idea of what's happening around the Quaffle. Luna also wonders if Zacharias Smith is suffering from Loser's Lurgy, since he can't keep the Quaffle. It's her vague commentary that makes Harry notice that McLaggen had gotten hold of Peakes' bat, and when the boy told him off, was hit by a bludger. Ron, who's in the Hospital Wing after almost dying (HBP18), is deeply amused by her commentary (HBP19).

When Harry and Ron are able to leave the infirmary, Luna meets the boys and Hermione, and delivers a note with the date of Dumbledore's next lesson. The red-head tells her that he liked her commentary, but she thinks he's making fun of her since everyone thought it was dreadful. Luna gives him a Gurdyroot, which according to her is good to ward off Gulping Plimpies (HBP20).

Luna and Neville are the only ex-members of the D.A. that show up when Hermione sends them a mensage through their magic galleons. Both of them, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, Lupin, Tonks and McGonagall are the only ones that fight the Death Eaters during the Battle of the Astronomy Tower (HBP28).

Luna went to the Hospital Wing with the others when go to see how Bill was doing after being attacked by Fenrir Greyback. She gets near to crying when she heard how Dumbledore died, because Luna and Hermione had been near Snape's office and were fooled by him when he stupefied Flitwick and told the girls that the Head of Ravenclaw had fallen ill. Lupin consoled her, saying that Snape would have probably killed both of them if they hadn't done what he told them to (HBP29).

Luna attended Dumbledore's funeral, helping Neville, still injured from the battle, get a seat (HBP30).

Luna went 'underground' with Neville and other members of the D.A.

Adulthood

After completing her education at Hogwarts, Luna became a Wizarding Naturalist, traveling the world in search of new, strange creatures, though she did finally acknowledge that some creatures may not exist, despite her father's beliefs. She may have had a romantic relationship with Neville Longbottom (MSNBC). She eventually married Newt Scamander's grandson Rolf Scamander, many years after the marriages of Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione (BLC).
