James Sirius Potter is the eldest son of Harry and Ginny Potter. Ron and Hermione Weasley are his godparents (YITL). Much like his namesakes (grandfather James Potter and James' best friend, Sirius Black), he loves to joke around and tease other people, particularly his brother Albus Severus. He told Albus, for instance, that most people only got letters from their parents once a month, even though Harry and Ginny wrote to James three times a week in his first year at school.
On September 1, 2017, James went to King's Cross along with Harry, Ginny, Albus and Lily Luna. In the car, he and Albus started arguing, because James kept taunting his brother with the possibility of his being Sorted into Slytherin. This distressed Albus immensely.
When the family arrived near Platform Nine and Three-Quarters, James was the first to cross the barrier to the platform, pushing his trolley (on top of which laid an owl cage). He quickly disappeared. to meet his friends and, much to his surprise, ran into Teddy Lupin in the platform, snogging Victoire Weasley. James asked Teddy what he was doing there; Teddy explained that he had come to see Victoire off, and told James to go away.
James rejoined his family before the Hogwarts Express departed to share the news with them. When he mentioned having interrupted Teddy and Victoire's snogging, Ginny mentioned that James was far too similar to Ron (DHE, DH7). Despite his shock, James was glad with the possibility of having Teddy join the family.
Harry wondered whether it wouldn't be better to have Teddy live at the Potters', and James offered to share Albus' room and give his to Lupin. Harry refused to consider this, saying, "You and Al will share a room only when I want the house demolished."
After checking Fabian's watch, Harry pointed out that it was almost eleven o'clock. Ginny hugged her son goodbye, and asked him to give Professor Longbottom love, to which the boy replied that it was impossible to give a professor 'love'—even though James knew Neville outside the school, he couldn't simply enter Herbology class and give him love.
James kicked Albus before saying goodbye to him as well, recommending that he should watch out for Thestrals. Albus was suddenly apprehensive, and asked his brother to confirm that the creatures were invisible. James laughed, allowed Ginny to kiss him, gave Harry a hug, entered the train and ran up the corridor to join his friends (DHE).
At some point of his Hogwarts days, James nicked the Marauder's Map from his father's desk at home, without Harry's knowledge (BLC).
