Igor Karkaroff was a well-known Death Eater. He was captured after the First War and acquitted after naming several other Death Eaters in his trial.

Following Voldemort's disappearance, and a six-month search for his head, Karkaroff was found by Alastor Moody and sent to Azkaban. Desperate to save himself, Karkaroff renounced his allegiance and made a deal with Barty Crouch, Sr. to give the Ministry information in exchange for his freedom.

Karkaroff indicated Antonin Dolohov, Evan Rosier, Travers, Mulciber and Augustus Rookwood as Death Eaters; all these names were useless but the latter. Rookwood, an Unspeakable, was imprisoned soon afterwards. Desperate to ensure that his information was viewed as valuable, Karkaroff offered one more name: Severus Snape. According to him, Snape was still a Death Eater, regardless of Albus Dumbledore's evidence on the matter. At this point, Dumbledore stood up and interrupted the trial, reassuring the court of his trust in Snape (GF30).

Igor Karkaroff was released from Azkaban, and eventually became the Headmaster of Durmstrang Institute. In 1994, Igor Karkaroff came to Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament, as he was Headmaster of one of the competing schools (GF15). He openly favoured Viktor Krum, the Durmstrang champion (GF19, GF20).

During the course of the Triwizard Tournament, Karkaroff started growing restless. He, like other Death Eaters, felt the Dark Mark on his forearm grow darker and clearer (GF23, GF27, GF30). The possibility of Voldemort returning frightened him to an extreme; he was undoubtedly seen as a traitor by those who he had mentioned as Death Eaters.

Igor confided these worries to Severus Snape, undoubtedly because Snape was in a similarly delicate position. Despite the fact that Karkaroff had named Snape in his trial (GF30), Severus offered to make excuses for him, and recommended that he should flee (GF23).

After Lord Voldemort's rebirth (GF32), Karkaroff ran away as soon as he felt the Dark Mark in his forearm burn, for fear of the Dark Lord's punishment (GF36). A year later, his body was found in a shack in the north of England, with the Dark Mark cast over it (HBP6).
