There are four Houses at Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. Each of them is named after its respective founder and values certain characteristics over others.

Students are sorted into a particular House at the start of their first year by the Sorting Hat, a hat enchanted to see into the head of the wearer and search for their prominent characteristics.
