The four Hogwarts Founders—Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw—built the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry together, a bit over a thousand years ago.

The school's four houses were named after them, and a hat was enchanted to identify in students the defining quality of each of the founders: Gryffindors are brave and daring; Slytherins are cunning and ambitious; Hufflepuffs are loyal and friendly; Ravenclaws are smart and studious.

Godric and Salazar's relationship soon began to deteriorate. One of the main issues was the admittance to the school of Muggle-born wizards and witches; Salazar had an intensely prejudicial view of Mudbloods, while Godric was much more accepting. In the end, Salazar parted ways with the other three, leaving behind him the legend of the Chamber of Secrets.
