Hippogriffs are magical creatures originating from Europe that can now be found worldwide. They combine the head, wings and front legs of an eagle with the body and hind legs of a horse. Hippogriffs nest on the ground. The females lay a single fragile egg from which the fledgling hatches within a day. Within a week, it can fly, and after a few months it is strong enough to accompany its parents on longer journeys. Hippogriffs feed from birds, small mammals and insects for which they burrow the ground.

They are fierce creatures that have to be treated respectfully. Only skilled wizards should attempt to tame them. To bend a Hippogriff's will, the wizard must keep eye contact and bow to it as a demonstration of his good intentions. It is not safe to approach a Hippogriff until the creature has shown its submission and returned the greeting (FBAZ).

The mother of famous magizoologist Newt Scamander was an enthusiastic breeder of fancy Hippogriffs, a fact that influenced her son's interest in magical creatures (FBa).
