Hinkypunks are Dark magical creatures. They look quite harmless, frail and little, as if made out of whisps of smoke, and have only one leg. They carry a lantern, which they use to lure travelers into the bogs they inhabit.
Remus Lupin had planned to teach his third-year Defence Against the Dark Arts class about Hinkypunks after they covered Grindylows, but being a werewolf, he could not teach because of the full moon. Severus Snape substituted him and taught the class about werewolves instead, despite Hermione Granger's protests (PA9). After his recovery, Lupin brought a Hinkypunk in a glass box to class. The creature made horrible squelching noises against the glass (PA10). In their exams at the end of the schoolyear, the third-years had to get past a Hinkypunk in a patch of marsh. The creature managed to lure Ron Weasley deep into the mud (PA16).
