Harry/Ginny, also known as Orange Crush and 87, is a canon heterosexual ship from the Trio Era involving Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley. There were a lot of ship wars when this ship was made canon. JKR implied in an interview with TLC and MuggleNet that Harry/Hermione shippers were "delusional" and this created a lot of drama on the ravid H/Hr shipppers such as those of the Harmony persuasion.

Canon Interaction

Although Ginny is much enamoured of Harry in books one through five, the ship itself first materializes when, after winning the Quidditch Cup, Harry returns to the Gryffindor common room and unexpectedly kisses Ginny. They are involved for the rest of the novel, until the end, when Harry breaks up with her for, as Ginny puts it, "some stupid noble reason"—he's afraid Voldemort will do something to her so as to weaken him if he ever finds out they were romantically involved.

Ginny kisses Harry on his seventeenth birthday, despite the fact that they are not together; however, they are interrupted by Ron. Harry displays signs of protectiveness towards Ginny, especially when she appears at Hogwarts for the final battle; however, their relationship is not shown as repaired until the epilogue. Nineteen years after the defeat of Voldemort, Harry and Ginny are married, and they have three children: Albus Severus, James, and Lily.

Fanon interaction

As this ship is canon and readers know each character's personality rather well, there's not much to invent as in, say, Lily/James fics. Harry/Ginny fics are most commonly found in the following genres: Romance, Drama, Angst, and Humour. Many writers compare this ship to Lily/James due to the similarities in the characters' appearances, and there is much speculation that it may end as tragically.

In fanon, Ginny is usually portrayed as being smart, often to the point of being a smart-aleck, but is often seen swooning ridiculously over Harry. Since J. K. Rowling mentions her talent at casting the Bat Bogey Hex, this too frequently appears in fanon. She is said to be a lot like her older brothers, Fred and George, and is therefore sometimes portrayed as something of a prankster herself, and having little or no regard for the rules. This is very reminiscent of how Lily is sometimes portrayed.

Harry, on the other hand, tends to be depicted as having either a hero complex or some form of clinical depression. Often he is shown sliding into angst because all his friends have died, or because he cannot deal with the pressure of being the Boy Who Lived.

Unfortunately, both of these characters are often portrayed as Mary Sues. There are those who believe that such characterisation merely reflects how the pair is described in the Harry Potter books.

Writing this ship

If you're thinking of writing a Harry/Ginny fic, here are a few helpful reminders:

Avoid

Here are some things that may turn your fic into a badfic:

  • Ginny saving Harry from self-harm.
  • Ginny saving Harry from Voldemort.
  • Harry telling Ginny that he loves redheads like his father did (Give it a moment's thought: would you want to be compared to your boyfriend's mother?).
  • Harry saving Ginny from a spiral of failure.
  • Harry channelling Ginny's love and using that to defeat Voldemort.
  • Harry and Ginny will not marry secretly while both of them are still at Hogwarts.

About Ginny

  • Ginny is said to be 'very powerful'; she is still, however, only human. She cannot do wandless magic, or beat Voldemort in a straight duel.
  • Ginny is very strong-willed and unlikely to be pushed into an abusive relationship.
  • Ginny is very attractive. This doesn't make her a slut, even though she has dated a few boys in canon.
  • Ginny has lived her life as the baby of the Weasleys and as the only girl in the family—the first female child to be born to the clan in several generations. She may be liable to act a little spoilt at times.

About Harry

  • Harry may have had a hard life, but that does not force him to become an "emo kid".
  • Although the Dursleys mistreated Harry, they are still his family and he has never appeared homocidal towards them.
  • Harry has no special powers, except purity of spirit and a talent for Quidditch.
  • Harry will not mysteriously gain powers because he had sex/kissed Ginny.
  • Harry is terrible at Occlumency. This likely means he would also be terrible at Legilimency.
  • Harry may have strong feelings for Ginny, but his friends Ron and Hermione are still his main companions.
