Hallowe'en

Hallowe'en is a wizard celebration that takes place on October 31. The name for this date among Muggles is the shortened version of "All Hallows' Eve" (also known as "All Saints' Eve").

Hallowe'en is usually an important date in Harry Potter books. Not only does Hogwarts host a big celebratory dinner, complete with huge pumpkins grown by Rubeus Hagrid, but a major plot event tends to happen around then.

• 1492: Nearly Headless Nick is (almost) beheaded (CS8).
• 1981: Lily and James Potter are murdered in Godric's Hollow. When Lord Voldemort attempts to do the same to Harry Potter, the Killing Curse backfires; the Dark Lord becomes extremely weak and flees to Albania (DH17).
• 1991: Professor Quirinus Quirrell lets loose a mountain troll in the castle. The troll attacks the bathroom in which Hermione Granger is crying; Harry Potter and Ron Weasley rescue her, and the [Trio] becomes inseparable from then on (PS10).
• 1992: Harry, Ron and Hermione go to Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday party. The Chamber of Secrets Basilisk Petrifies Mrs. Norris, Argus Filch's cat. She is its first victim. Harry hears the Basilisk's voice and follows it; the Trio is the first to find her (CS8).
• 1993: Sirius Black tries to enter Gryffindor Tower; when the Fat Lady refuses to let him in without the password, he slasher her portrait (PA8).
• 1994: The names of the Triwizard Tournament champions are chosen by the Goblet of Fire: Viktor Krum for Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour for Beauxbatons and Cedric Diggory for Hogwarts. After the Death Eater Barty Crouch, Jr., disguised as Alastor Moody, uses a Confundus Charm on the Goblet, it chooses Harry Potter as the second Hogwarts champion.

Due to the dangerous nature of wizarding Hallowe'en celebrations, the Ministry of Magic chose to restrict the magical community's festivities. This decision was protested by many, including popular singer Celestina Warbeck (DP).
