A Gurdyroot is a plant similar to a green onion; according to Luna Lovegood, it can be used to keep Gulping Plimpies away (HBP20).

On March 10, 1997, Luna searches her bag for a letter from Albus Dumbledore she was asked to pass on to Harry Potter. She hands various items from the bag to Ron Weasley, including a Gurdyroot. After she has given Harry the letter, she takes back her stuff from Ron, who congratulates her on her commentary at the last Quidditch match and asks her what the plant is. Luna tells him the name and says that he can keep it, as she owns several. She also recommends the Gurdyroot to ward off Gulping Plimpies. When she leaves, Ron, who is still holding the Gurdyroot, amusedly comments that Luna has grown on him (HBP20).

When the Trio meet Luna at Bill and Fleur's wedding on August 1, 1997, Luna tells them that her father is just giving their present to the bridal couple. Ron asks her if it is a lifetime's supply of Gurdyroots. Hermione Granger tries to kick him under the table but hits Harry instead (DH8).

Xenophilius Lovegood offers home made infusion of Gurdyroot to the Trio when they visit him in December 1997. The drink is deep red like beetroot juice and tastes like liquid bogeys. While Harry starts questioning him abut the Hallows symbol, Xeno adds several lumps of sugar to his cup and smacks his lips in apparent delight at the drink. Harry takes a sip to be polite and almost has to gag (DH20, DH21). When Hermione takes Polyjuice Potion to turn into Bellatrix Lestrange in March 1998, she complains that the potion tasted "disgusting, worse than Gurdyroots!" (DH26).
