Great Lake

The Great Lake is a lake in the Hogwarts grounds on the south side of the castle. First-year students, guided by Rubeus Hagrid use boats to cross it (PS6). Dennis Creevey fell into the Lake when he first crossed it, and entered the Sorting Feast wearing Hagrid's huge coat (GF12).

Several creatures inhabit the Great Lake, the Giant Squid, grindylows and Merpeople.

The second task of the Triwizard Tournament consisted of having the four champions enter the Lake and rescuing from Merpeople the person each of them would miss the most. This required not only finding a way to stay underwater without breathing for hours but also overcoming several obstacles, such as Grindylows (GF26).
