Goblin Rebellions
From UnknowableWiki
The goblin rebellions were a series of violent goblin uprisings during the 17th and 18th century (W3, PA5, GF15). During these rebellions, the goblins demonstrated that they were not willing to put up with unfair treatment by wizards (GF24).
Two causes for the rebellions can be inferred for certain from the Third W.O.M.B.A.T.[1]: The Ministry of Magic Decree of 1631 that prevented all magical beings other than wizards from carrying a wand, and the goblins' belief that Godric Gryffindor had stolen his sword from Ragnuk the First. Other possible causes include the public ducking of Urg the Unclean in the village pond, the imprisonment of goblin confidence trickster Ug the Unreliable, and the accidental death of Nagnok, a Gringotts goblin (W3).
One of the Hogsmeade inns, presumably the Three Broomsticks, was the headquarters of the 1612 goblin rebellion (PA5).
Urg the Unclean was the leader of the 18th century rebellions (FW).
Today, the goblin rebellions are one of the most important topics Hogwarts students study in History of Magic (PS15, GF15, GF22, GF31, OP31). For the final exams during their first year, Harry Potter and his friends have to memorize the dates of the goblin rebellions (PS15). During their fourth year exams, Ron Weasley cannot remember all the names of the goblin rebels and invents some; by luck, he guesses Urg the Unclean's name correctly (GF31). In his History of Magic O.W.L. in 1996, Harry skips question four, which asks whether wand legislation contributed to the goblin riots of the 18th century (OP31).

- ↑ Although there is no official solution to the Third W.O.M.B.A.T., we know that these two are correct because answering that they were not a cause results in a negative score when no other test questions are answered.
