Fluffy is a monstrous three-headed dog raised by Rubeus Hagrid. He has mad, rolling yes, yellowish fangs and a tendency to drool (PS9). While he is extremely dangerous awake, Fluffy will fall asleep at the sound of music (PS16).

Hagrid bought him from a Greek he met in a pub in 1990 (PS11). Albus Dumbledore asked Hagrid to use the dog as one of the many forms to protect the Philosopher's Stone. Fluffy was stationed on the trapdoor that led to the Stone behind a locked door in a corridor on the third floor (PS9).

On the night of September 12, 1991, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and Neville Longbottom accidentally opened the door to Fluffy's corridor when they were hiding from Argus Filch. Luckily, their appearance took Fluffy by surprise and they stormed out of the room before he could attack (PS9).

On Hallowe'en, Quirinus Quirrell made an attempt to get past Fluffy and steal the Stone. Severus Snape tried to prevent him and was bitten by the dog. Harry saw the wound and heard Snape complain how one should watch all three heads at once. The Trio told Hagrid their suspicion that Snape wanted to steal what was hidden under the trapdoor and Hagrid let slip that he had lent Fluffy to Dumbledore (PS11).

In spring 1992, Hagrid met a hooded stranger—Professor Quirrell in disguise—in the Hog's Head. Quirrell kept buying him drinks and offered him to play cards for a dragon egg. He asked Hagrid whether he could handle such a dangerous creature and Hagrid boasted of his experience with Fluffy and told him how to get past the dog (PS16).

Quirrell went past Fluffy in early June. He calmed him with a harp. He was quickly followed by Ron, Hermione and Harry, who sent the dog to sleep with the flute Hagrid had given Harry for Christmas. Ron and Hermione later flew out of the trapdoor and past Fluffy on broomsticks (PS16).

Hagrid was terribly ashamed later that he had acidentally told Quirrell how to pass Fluffy (PS17).

After the Stone was destroyed, Fluffy was released into the Forbidden Forest (BPB).
