The First War began at some point in the late 1960s, with Lord Voldemort's rise to power. It ended with the Dark Lord's attempt to murder Harry Potter, on October 31, 1981; the Killing Curse backfired, weakening Voldemort considerably and forcing him to flee England.
The beginning of the War
No precise date is given in the books for the beginning of the War. Albus Dumbledore says on November 1, 1981: "We've had precious little to celebrate for eleven years" (PS1); from that it is safe to assume that Voldemort's power was consolidated by 1970.
Cornelius Fudge's statement, in the summer of 1996, that Voldemort has eluded capture for "almost thirty years" (HBP1) indicates that Voldemort had probably begun terrorising the wizarding world shortly before 1970.
